    Many people already know about “Heavy Water” and the role it played in the projects for the development of nuclear power. Not many people know what it really is though, much less how it can benefit all of humankind and potentially serve as one of the new, more viable, long-term and sustainable energy sources for the people of the earth. Moreover, there are vast quantities of Deuterium already in place and ready for development once they can be extracted. While that may sound easy enough, it is a bit more complicated than that. Complicated though it may be, it is possible without any adverse impact to the earth or to the environment. Perhaps even better, once it is extracted, it can be utilized in many different ways including as a means to produce clean and sustainable energy for the people of the world. While deuterium may not in and of itself be the ultimate answer or an end-all solution, it is certainly a step in the right direction.

    H2O is a familiar symbol for Di-hydrogen Oxide or as it is more commonly known, water. The H2 is for the two parts of Hydrogen that are in every molecule of water. The O of course, is for the Oxygen particle in every molecule of water. What is not so commonly known is that Hydrogen generally only has one Isotope known as a Protium but some hydrogen particles within the water contain a second isotope. The second Isotope is known as a Deuteron and while extremely rare, does exist in quantities large enough to be utilized for the purposes of energy creation. These types of Hydrogen are known by the Periodic Symbol 2H. The amount of 2H in the earth's oceans is approximately 0.0156% by volume or roughly 0.0312% of mass.

    Generally the process for removing the Deuterium involves a great amount of energy due to the need for a process of electrolysis to separate it. In the depths of the ocean however, the pressures are so great that this material is separated in a natural process, leaving it available to be harvested freely by merely pumping out the water and then separating the Dueterium. But therein lies the caveat as well. The pressures at such a depth often reach ten thousand PSI and as such, most efforts to extract this material to date have resulted in the crushing of any equipment sent down to these depths. Thus, while the Deuterium can be virtually pumped out, there is, until now, no viable means for reaching such depths to extract the water for the extraction of the deuterium. Note, it was said that “until now” among the many experts GIDIFA is working with, are people who have developed the means to extract the materials. Once extracted, this material has much more potential than the original intent of using it for Heavy Water. While it can be used in nuclear programs, there is also a great deal of work under way to convert it to a full on fuel source as well.

    There are also different means for producing energy from the extracted deuterium and these have already been prepared for so that once the extraction process can begin, this material can go into immediate use for the production of clean, renewable energy. Ultra Dense Deuterium or UDD as it has come to be known most commonly, is showing some great potential for generating power. While extremely dense, this particular method does show great potential for replacing nuclear power as the clean fuel of the future. There are also a great many other methods currently under development as well and it estimated that by the year 2020, Deuterium will be commonly used in the Philippines and perhaps around the world.
